Time Enough For The Time Lord: A Preview Of “Doctor Who” Series 7
Personal Note: one cool thing about watching “Doctor Who” in England is that you will watch it how it’s meant to be seen, on BBC1 Saturday Night!
It seems like forever that “Doctor Who” was off the air (it was nine months), but now that the new series starts tonight, it seems worth it to me. It is as usual full of surprises (The Doctor helping his mortal enemies, the Daleks), funny one-liners, and Amy Pond under a cinematic setting!
Unlike the previous two series, this year’s series doesn’t have a year-long story arc. Judging by the British media, the focus this year seems to be on the departure of companion Amy Pond (Karen Gillan) from the show rather than The Doctor (Matt Smith) himself!
Gillan’s departure is sad, but “Doctor Who” as a show gets better as the staff revolves. Showrunner Steven Moffat believes that Gillan’s successor will work out, so I am too. Besides, I want to remember Amy as an absolute stunner -- something that will not be the case the longer Gillan stays.
Besides, we still have the great writing, smart plots and the presence of Matt Smith as The Doctor! I feel that his performance as the last of The Lords is absolutely brilliant, and the BBC must feel the same way since they extended his contract for another two years. Not only will Smith be The Doctor through the 50th anniversary year of 2013, but for the year after that, giving both he and Moffat time to set up an incredible finale whenever Smith decides to leave the show.
Enjoy the ride. Amy’s still around for five more episodes, Moffat and Smith are still working hard, and this season has dinosaurs on a spaceship!
So run!
